Career Opportunities in Community Banking

March 07, 2018

Interested in switching careers? Community banking offers a huge variety of opportunities as well as the possibility for career progression, good pay and benefits. You may think that all positions within the bank require previous experience, but that’s not necessarily true. Different positions come with different requirements, and almost every position offers room for personal and professional growth.

Before you start looking for a job in banking, it’s important to know what types of positions are available and what qualifications you’ll need.

For many job seekers, becoming a customer service representative (CSR) is a great entry-level introduction to banking. Good communication skills are important, and it helps to be a “people person.” This position does not require any previous banking experience and can lead to other roles in the industry.

A Service Banker and/or Personal Banker role will work directly with customers handling various transactions and resolving issues. Often they sell and service bank products in the branch locations. If desired, such experience within the field can lead to management positions and corporate roles.

Other positions include mortgage and commercial lenders, plus opportunities in the operations department, loan processing, human resources, marketing, information technologies, property management, online banking, and the list goes on!

Having described a few of the career options available in community banking, you might be wondering why a bank or financial institution is a great place to work. Well, we can’t speak for everyone, but at Bank Five Nine we offer continuous, sound growth, employee leadership, a family centric vision, and employee development. In 2016 and 2017, American Banker Magazine recognized us as a Best Bank to Work For, and for eight consecutive years, we have been named a Top Place to Work employer in Southeastern Wisconsin by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. We’ve been the top Community SBA lender in the state for the past five years and have been recognized by many local Chambers of Commerce as Business of the Year.

Need more? Our President & CEO, Mark W. Mohr, was named the 2015 ICBA Community Banker of the Year and the #1 Top Leader for midsize employers in the 2012, 2014 and 2016 Top Place to Work surveys. An annual offsite employee leadership event is held for all employees, and bi-monthly leadership forums are held with our bank’s President and CEO. Decisions are made locally by bank employees who live and work in the communities we serve.

For you and your family, Bank Five Nine offers a variety of work schedules to help balance your work/life needs. Our Total Rewards program offers a comprehensive suite of benefits to enrich your working experience including:

And while you work on your personal goals, we want to help you achieve your professional goals as well. We offer a variety of development classes from in-person training to on-demand curriculum. We tailor our talent development options to provide flexibility for every learner. Bank Five Nine promotes a culture of mentorship through regular development workshops and seminars. Our annual “training camp” provides employees with a dedicated week of employee requested topics, curriculum and learning events to promote personal, career and skill enhancement.

Whew! Not enough? In addition to everything we’ve already told you, Bank Five Nine also places high emphasis on our mission to “make lives better” through community involvement and volunteerism. In 2017, our employees volunteered nearly 15,000 hours at more than 425 local organizations. We also contribute to the communities we serve through charitable donations, totaling nearly $1M over the past 5 years.

Providing jobs, volunteer opportunities and helping local businesses grow and succeed are just a few ways Bank Five Nine has committed to giving back. Our commitment to the communities we serve sets us apart from other financial institutions and industries.
