Employee Highlight: VJ Scully – Hooked on Making Lives Better with Fishing

August 23, 2024

At Bank Five Nine, we are committed to making lives better, and Mortgage Lender, VJ Scully, brings this mission to life through his passion for fishing and unwavering dedication to the community. For the past 12 years, VJ has hosted a special annual event at his home on Okauchee Lake, where he invites those with special needs for a day of fishing, grilling, and unforgettable memories.

This heartwarming tradition is a collaborative effort with the YMCA of Oconomowoc, and VJ’s wife, Leanne, plays a significant role in making it all happen. Leanne, who previously worked in the Oconomowoc School District, and at the YMCA, and has extensive experience with individuals with special needs, is instrumental in ensuring the success of the event each year.

After hearing about this awesome event, Bank Five Nine President and CEO, Tim Schneider, joining the festivities to help with grilling. The event has grown over the years, with three buses full of guests eagerly arriving for a day of fun. VJ is fortunate to have three generous neighbors who also contribute to the event by bringing their pontoon boats, ensuring there’s plenty of space for everyone who wants to fish. Their support highlights the incredible sense of community that makes the event so special.

VJ’s dedication and the joy he brings to others embody the mission of Bank Five Nine. This annual event is more than just a day on the lake – it’s a testament to the power of community and the difference that one person can make.

“We couldn’t be prouder of VJ, not only for the exceptional work he does for his customers but also for the incredible impact he makes in our community,” said Tim Schneider. “Our employees truly live and breathe our mission every day. Whether it’s helping a family secure a home loan, volunteering at local events, serving on boards and committees, or hosting special events like this one, they are making a difference both individually and collectively in the lives of those we serve.”

VJ’s passion for fishing extends to his involvement in the Big Bass Battle supporting Wisconsin Hero Outdoors, where he has guided veterans and first responders in outdoor competitions. Wisconsin Hero Outdoors, established in 2016 by a group of veterans and first responders, uses outdoor activities to address physical and mental health challenges while fostering camaraderie. Their mission connects veterans, first responders, and their families with Wisconsin’s outdoor experiences and supports 501(c)(3) organizations focused on outdoor activities for the veteran, military, and first responder community.  This past year, VJ guided Calvin, a veteran who served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and they finished 2nd in one of the rounds!

The way VJ treats others and his passion for helping are shining examples of the values we uphold at Bank Five Nine. His efforts extend far beyond the office, reflecting our commitment to not just doing business, but also to making lives better by building stronger, more connected communities.
